This little magical island (36°30’33.57″N, 22°58’48.58″E) at the southern edge of the Laconic Peninsula is a small paradise for visitors. Simos beach at the Sarakiniko Bay, is without a doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. It is an endless, pure white, sandy beach with sapphire waters and a transparent seabed, reminds of the Caribbean. The sand dunes with the bushes and the cedar forest of the area are protected by the NATURA Network as sensitive ecosystems with rare fauna and flora. You must taste the fresh fish at the picturesque little port, visit the Lower Island with Panagia’s beach, explore the typical Mediterranean coast trees, the prickly cedars and enjoy the sun and the sea in the camping areas. Besides Neapoli, Elafonisos is connected coastally to Gytheion while a lot of visitors choose to reach the beautiful island on pleasure crafts and sailing boats.
This small, majestic island on the southern edge of Peloponnese is considered to be one of the most famous touristic destinations for the summer period and its characteristics are the beautiful sandy beaches and the crystal waters. It was named Elafonisos (elafi=deer), after the plethora of red deer in the area. According to Pausanias, there were also a lot of sanctuaries dedicated to Goddess Artemis.
